Some of the general objectives of this research programme are ensuring the availability of geological information at the national level and promoting versatile utilisation of geological information in the society.

The Geological Survey of Finland is currently implementing a project aimed at creating an online-based ground investigation service meeting specific requirements. Once finished, the ground investigation register will offer ground investigation data from the state of Finland, municipal organisations, and private companies in a nation-wide register.

Soil maps and survey data can be used to create useful, simplified, and clear maps including soil characteristic data for land-use planning and municipal planning needs.
 

The constructability of areas with soft soil and the planning of subgrade reinforcement in such areas depend on the thickness of loam as well as the geological and geotechnical properties of the clay.

To be able to assess the contamination of soil and its restoration needs, one must be aware of the background concentrations of heavy metals and other naturally occurring chemical elements.

Fragmentation of the bedrock and other quality issues influencing rock construction or other methods in which communities utilise the bedrock are connected to the structures and rock type groups created when the bedrock evolved.

Geological bedrock surveys for urban areas are currently being developed to better suit the needs of land-use planning, rock construction, and environmental protection in particular.

BaltCICA is designed to focus on the most imminent problems that climate change will cause in the Baltic Sea Region.

Acid sulfate soils  - risks and mapping

When layered clay that is present in many parts of Finland’s western coast is oxidised when soil is dried, sulphuric acid is created within the soil, and the acid dissolves metals from the environment. The acidic and metallic runoff water from such acidic sulphate soil (AS soil) causes fish deaths and destroys all life in some rivers. Locating, assessing the risks, and alleviating the impact of such AS soil is especially important.
