GTK is an internationally oriented geoscience research and contract services agency. GTK plays a vital role in providing findings of applied and fundamental research, developing innovative ways to acquire and use geoinformation, and applying its geoscience expertise to industry needs and the wider community within the minerals, energy, land use and construction sectors. The main research focus is in mineral resources and their sustainable utilization. GTK contributes to a wide range of international geoscience research programs; including mapping and environmental monitoring projects and is active in developing multidisciplinary collaborative research projects with universities, research institutes and stakeholders across related sectors.

Research activities at GTK are currently coordinated through six research programs.
