The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is one of the leading geosciences research centers in Europe with a strong international focus. GTK has a group of around 30 geophysicists with a broad experience and know-how in all major geophysical applications. Furthermore, we have extensive and globally top-ranked data infrastructure including magnetic, EM, gravity, radiometric, reflection seismic and petrophysical data, in addition to various geological and geochemical data.
We are now seeking a Research Professor to develop our know-how and R&I activities related to applied geophysics, with the aim of creating new innovations and customer-oriented applications for mineral exploration, mining, civil engineering, various cleantech solutions, and geological modelling, in general. Further main tasks for the successful applicant will be to initiate, prepare and lead national and international R&I projects funded through competitive financing, and to implement competence development in geophysics at GTK.
A Research Professor is expected to have a PhD in geophysics and he/she should be an acknowledged expert in the field, and have a good research record and experience in R&I activities related to applied geophysics. We would, particularly, appreciate expertise in electromagnetic and potential field methods applied to various fields in economic geology and geological modelling. A good understanding and experience in using various geophysical techniques, instruments and interpretation tools is necessary for the job. Alternatively, the position may also be filled as a tenure-track position at the Associate Research Professor level, who should have a PhD in geophysics, and extensive postdoctoral experience in applied geophysics including electromagnetic and potential field methods.
The successful candidate must be highly motivated and have well-established networks with international research groups in applied geophysics and be able to demonstrate an ability to attract external funding. Research experience in cooperation with the private sector is appreciated. Special emphasis is placed on collaborative skills and the ability to lead research projects with international partners, as well as the ability to lead competence development in at GTK. Fluency in English is the minimum language requirement.
The appointment is for five years, with the possibility of extension, and is located at one of our offices in Espoo (Helsinki capital region), Kuopio or Rovaniemi. We offer an internationally oriented work environment with highly trained personnel. Benefits of the job include a working week of 36,45 hours with daily flexibility, generous annual holidays and a government healthcare and pension plan. GTK’s payroll system consists of a job-specific component (Level 12, €5414/month for a Research Professor, or Level 11, €4616/month for an Associate Research Professor) plus a personal component of up to 50%, depending on performance and expertise.
