Research Laboratory facilities

The Research Laboratory is part of Finland’s national research infrastructure. The lab is well equipped with the latest instrumentation and boasts a staff recognized internationally for their expertise in analysis and study of geological materials. The lab’s main areas of focus are isotope geology and applied mineralogy. The lab is known for innovative method development focused on solving the specific challenges of its clients and partners.

The lab’s research and analysis services are used both in-house and by external clients, which include ore exploration firms, mining companies, metallurgical refiners, energy companies, construction and consulting firms, water utilities, universities and other research institutes, and even private individuals.

Finnish Geosciences Research Laboratory 

The SGL Laboratory has been recently upgraded by the addition of a high resolution single collector ICPMS and a field emission SEM. Combined with the already existing multicollector ICPMS, the SGL laboratory now has a full suite of tools for:
•  isotope analysis of liquids and solids in situ (by laser)
•  trace to ultratrace element analysis of liquids and solids in situ (by laser)
•  submicron particle/mineral imaging and analysis

Electron optics and microanalysis

GTK has a long tradition of microanalysis and electron optics with the first microanalyzer acquired in 1965 and the latest Cameca SX100 installed in late 2003. Most analyses produced in the lab are for the study of natural resource materials and in ore exploration.

Radiogenic isotopes

The understanding of the age structures and evolution of Finnish bedrock is largely based on GTK isotope geology studies. The program began in 1963 and since that time has produced age and isotopic data on thousands of samples.

X-ray diffraction (XRD)

XRD is ideal for study of the crystalline phases of minerals and some synthetic compounds. It can also be used to estimate the relative amount of phases in a sample.

Selective fragmentation

At the end of 2007, GTK acquired a commercial system that uses short-duration high voltage pulses for selective fragmentation of geological samples and composite materials.
