Geochemical Atlas of Europe

GTK had a central role in the multimedia mapping program for the Geochemical Atlas of
Europe, which represents the first published contribution to the IUGS Global Geochemical Baselines
Programme. The atlas – which is accessible on-line – presents compilations of baseline geochemistry
for soils, sediments and surface waters, covering 26 European countries. Survey results are used in
formulating European environmental legislation and the databases forms a Europe-wide reference
network for use in leveling national datasets.
Geochemical Landscapes of Alaska – New Map Presentations and Interpretations for 23
Elements in Surficial Materials
In cooperation with a GTK author specialized in
statistical mathematics and data presentation, US Geological Survey (USGS) recently completed a new
type of geochemical atlas of Alaska. Geochemical patterns are presented and interpreted for 23
elements, ash yield, and pH in soils and other unconsolidated materials from 265 collection sites
throughout Alaska. This compilation is useful in assessing geochemical baselines and in
interpretation of geochemical landscapes when the purpose is to identify broad regional patterns
associated with geology, mineral resource provinces, and geochemical areas of interest in human,
animal, and plant health issues.
